E Is For Elena

Today's art project is brought to you by the letter "E". Just kidding... this just made me think of the old Sesame Street thing where they do a whole segment on stuff that starts with a certain letter. (I can hear the crickets in the background chirping away.) Anyways.... She sent a bunch of us these little letters to decorate for her studio. They spell "remember" and I think she was going to do a tribute to her father somehow. I wanted to do something steampunk but the letters are only about 5" high (too small to make that fussy) and they are made from some kind of resin or plastic. (Hard to tell since they are pretty heavy.) Below are the details of what I did.

1. The letter was already painted with a white base coat so I sanded it a little to rough it up since it was super smooth. I then tore up several old dictionary pages and glued them willy-nilly all over the entire letter. I then gave it a wash of watered down white acrylic paint to knock back the stark black words.
Once it was dry I rubbed some gold wax paste all over it to highlight the torn edges. (I sanded it to make it look a little worn out.)

2. The butterflies are cut from a piece of the new paper from Graphic 45 called "Curiosity Shoppe". I hand colored some of them because they were black and white and others to punch up the color a little. I then added little bits of Distess Stickles to certain parts of the wings. The butterfly bodies are made from 26 gauge black wire. I took one piece and folded it in half for the antennae and then wrapped third piece around it to make the body thicker.

3. The scroll work is laser cut chipboard that I had from a company that has since gone out of business. I coated it with a couple layers of antique gold UTEE and heat embossed it. The last little touch was to glue on the peridot crystals to give it some bling.
