Gearing Up For Steampunk

I included both versions of this pedal gear because I thought the one with the dotted lines and arrows was very cool. (The arrows will show up when they are not on a black background.)

Sorry this post is so late today. We have been having a record amount of rain which means that my basement studio leaks. My hubby was trying to give me a break today by helping me with vacuuming the basement. Unfortunately he forgot to screw on the cap for the drain/hose attachment and when the vacuum gets full it sprays water everywhere. This time it was all over my drawer unit full of all my vintage book pages and steampunk metal embellishments. Needless to say I had to quickly separate everything and iron all the paper dry and mop off all the metal so it won't rust. (Although the rust could be a good look.)

Get Your Grunge On

Once again it is time to celebrate the techniques of Tim Holtz over at Studio L3. This one is a faux watercolor stamping technique and it is super easy to create a painterly watercolor effect even if you have never lifted a brush in your entire life. To see the technique just click here and you will be taken to Tim's blog. You can also read up on all the previous stuff going on at Linda's Studio by clicking here.

Below are all the details of what I did and even a few extra samples.

OK... so this is the tag I did for this weeks challenge. I admit after finishing it that I had a little bit of a
deja-vu moment. I knew that I had done something similar for a birthday tag that was given to Lillian while I was at the Florida retreat. (I didn't post that tag because I didn't want Lillian to see it before the unveiling.) Then I realized that I had done one similar for another Grungy Monday challenge. (What a slap your forehead ... DUH.... I'm an idiot moment.) At least they are all different from each other even though they have a lot of the same elements. I promise not to repeat this design again but I was looking to finish a tag for the sake of showing/doing the technique and not just completing a "new" design.

ANYWAYS..... here's what I did.

Since I don't have many "solid" types of stamps I actually did the background for the entire tag with this technique. I don't have very many Adirondack pads either so I opted to use my Distress Inks instead. I used the colors of Scattered Straw, Wild Honey and Tumbled Glass. (I made some other color combos which are shown below.) I then stamped over the tiled background with a "writing" stamp. The black border is a punch from EK Success that I punched from black paper that was embossed with black glitter embossing powder. That was glued under a piece of metallic ribbon which in turn covers the trim that the beaded fringe is attached to. The wings are white pearl german scrap that I rubber a little Tumbled Glass Distress Ink over to bring out the details. The finishing details are a black eyelet in the tag hole, A piece of gold wire wrapped around the ribbon and curled, and I heat embossed the face image in the heart with black and then colored it with colored pencils.

Lillian's Birthday tag

On the right is the stamped image without the watercolor technique applied to it. I chose not to use this tag because I felt it didn't show the technique very well.

On the right is the color combo of Victorian Velvet,  Spun Sugar and Milled Lavender. On the left is the color combo of Scattered Straw, Spun Sugar and Milled Lavender. I didn't use either one of these tags because the combos just didn't speak to me.

An ad for the new "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movie made me think of my recent search for mermaid images. Here are a few of the choicest ones I found.

I have always been fascinated by images of peacocks. What's not to love about the brilliant iridescent colors of such a flamboyant bird. These images were all grabbed from a new site I found that I will definitely be visiting a lot called "The Pictorial Arts". To visit Thomas' fabulous site just click here.
