Remains of the Day Journal

This was a class I purchased on-line a while ago and just now got around to trying out. I have to say it is very addicting and I actually went on eBay and purchased a whole bunch of vintage magazines, books and other paper stuff. The class can be bought from Mary Ann Moss from her site by clicking here. The journal is made from all kinds of paper ephemera and most of it is sewn on a machine. (I did glue some of the pockets so that I didn't sew over a pocket opening on the back of the page.)  I am going to bring this journal with me to house all the ATC's I hope to bring and trade on the Tim Holtz cruise I am taking in September. (You'll notice there is a pocket sewn onto every page for this express purpose.) I am hoping to make a steampunk version after this one but we'll see if I can come up with enough paper to fit that theme.

Fancy Frames And A few Extras

Here are 3 frames that can be used many different ways. I posted all of them so you don't have to spend time in a program to alter them. The L'Artiste one I posted as is because it would make a great label. (Of course it leaves no room for other info on it but you can add another label for that.)

Get Your Grunge On

Yep It's that time again. I completely missed last weeks challenge so I wanted to be sure and catch this one. I managed 2 greeting cards but kept it to the KISS method. (Keep It Simple Stupid/Sweetheart.)  Be sure and check out Linda's blog here to see all the details. You can also click here to see the Tim Holtz video that shows the technique for this weeks challenge.

For this background technique I chose the colors Dusty Concord, Faded Jeans, Bundled Sage and Milled Lavender. The swirl was something I hand cut for the previous project and ended up not using it so it got a new home. Before I mounted the swirl down I machine stitched around the edge of the black paper with a zig-zag. I also used a black glaze gel pen to add the row of dots along the top and bottom of the black paper.

Since I had little time between vacuuming the water still coming into my studio I again used the scraps that were still out from other projects. I used the colors of Rusty Hinge, Frayed Burlap, and mixed Broken China and Bundled Sage for the blue green color. I then stamped the wallpaper pattern over the background with some Staz-On ink in Timber Brown. I layered the gears in 2 colors of copper paper which are cut from Tim Holtz Gadget Gears and Spellbinders Sprightly Sprockets dies.

Well ... there may not be that many on these beautiful background prints but there'a lot.

The Greatest Show On Earth

I actually did these pages (and covers) a couple of weeks ago but with my basement leaking I kinda forgot to post them. Anyways these are for another Artistic Evolution journal and the pages are for Gina Goodling. I am the first person to work in this journal so I was working off of Gina's artwork which is a woman standing by a horse. The first thought that came to mind was a circus performer riding bareback in the center ring. After I found the image of the bareback rider on a Saturday Evening Post magazine cover I went to work. It seems like a simple couple of pages but I fussed over it for days trying to get the swirled background to work. Below are the details.

1. The background is rubber stamped onto black card stock and then I heat embossed the harlequin pattern in black. (The bareback rider image is raised up on foam tape.)
2. The swirls on the background of the second page are all die cuts that I cut from paper that I wiped a Versamark pad over and then heat embossed with my own mix of glitter embossing powder. (I used royal blue and a deep green paper.)
3. The title was something that I created on my computer using some of the hundreds of fonts that I have been collecting.
4. The "over the edge" treatment on the right hand page is simply circles cut from lightweight chipboard that I first covered with more heat embossed paper. I then covered the edge with some fancy black and gold upholstery gimp.
5. The tent on the left hand page is a pattern I drew out and covered with more heat embossed paper. I used die cut circles again for the bottom edge of the tent and covered the edge with some black and gold trim. The flag is a craft pick painted gold and the ball on top is a teeny tiny piece of chipboard.
6. The circus performer next to the tent is a rubber stamp image that matches the Graphic 45 paper "Le Cirque". (The title on the other side of the tent is from the same set.)

I also had permission to work some more on Gina's covers. Since she had done crazy quilting I just had to add to them and since she didn't have time to embellish the inside and outside back cover she was more then happy to let me play. Her colors were royal blue, amethyst and emerald green and since she didn't have any green on any of the covers I had to add some to the front cover as well. Below are the before and after photos.
