You just gotta wonder about these costumes. If these were showgirls then they probably danced in these costumes and you have to wonder how well they stayed up. After all they didn't have the miracle of Lycra or really any kind of elastic back then. I guess we all have to suffer for our art.

What's In My Drawer? (It Must Be Wednesday)

Click on the picture to see a larger view.

AHHHHAAAA! I bet you thought I forgot it was Wednesday. (Common habit since I don't work.) But it's still Wednesday so here are my drawers.

The top one is full off all my wood pieces. I have to now relocate this drawer to something bigger as I bought more wood pieces that won't fit in there. (Sigh!)

The bottom drawer is all my brass ornaments. Some I have made molds out of so I can recreate them in polymer clay. Some of them can cost up to $5.00 each so it saves a lot to be able to recreate them.

A Panda For Amanda

Click on the picture to see a larger view.

A while ago I was sent 2 puzzle pieces to alter for Amanda and I just unburied them on the table behind my desk a few days ago. (Sorry Amanda!!!) Anyways one is supposed to be an asian theme and the other is to be done in purple and green. On the asian puzzle piece I Mod Podged the background with various asian calligraphy and josh papers. The flowers are some punches that are either cherry or plum blossoms (I can't remember which.) The face is made from polymer clay and surrounded with seed beads. The chinese knot I got in a trade from someone for some of my art supplies that I wanted to get rid of. The small "kanji" I actually had made for myself from a company online called Good Characters. (That is the red square under the face.) You answer some questions about what you like to do and they create a name (or kanji) stamp that is unique to you. Even someone else named Valerie will not be the same because of their birthday and the things they like. The kanji is pronounced (wei le li) or way lay lee. (There is no "V" sound in Chinese.)

Wei is a character used in female names because it has a very pleasant and soft sound in Chinese. It can also refer to a fern, and as such is associated with nature, gardening and plants.

Le means joy and happiness. When pronounced as "yue" it means music. It is also associated with optimism and confindence.

Li is white jasmine.

This is a name that touches peoples many senses and has good visual associations. (wei and le) relate to what I love-visual art and gardening.

Yeah pretty cool huh? I thought so...but be warned they are not cheap to get. Mine was $50.00 but I LOVE asian stuff and I just thought it was too cool to have my own name stamp in Chinese.

Gone Postal Again!

No it's not time to go to the office and shoot up the place with an AK47. It's time to download more postage stamps. Technically the bottom sheet is not actual postage but it is really graphic and fun none the less. Enjoy!

Sunday Digital Download

The above designs were an idea I got from watching a quilting show. (I know... sounds crazy huh!) These 4 papers are part of a series I call "Pixel Stripe". They are done by selecting a one pixel wide strip from a photo or other piece of art. The strip is then pasted on a 12x12 work area and I expand it to reach across the whole work area. (This creates a striped piece of "paper".) I create several layers of the same set of stripes and then I go in and rotate on layer a little. Sometimes I will go to the filters and warp, swirl or do any number of things to distort the stripes into waves. I will select a 1 or 2 inch band of "waves" and copy them to a new 12x12 working area. I copy and paste enough of these stripes to go across the whole 12 inch space and I "flip" every other stripe vertically so that it mirrors it's neighboring stripe. I do several sets of these and I paste them all into one 12x12 work area with each one on a separate layer. Then The magic happens when I turn "on" and turn "off" certain layers and I blend them together using either "lighten", "darken", or "overlay". The result is the glamorous waves and sinuous curves of overlapping color you see above.

I know it all sounds like a daunting process and some of the language may not be familiar to you if you are not a Photoshop user but it is all easier then it sounds. Maybe one day I will do a screen shot tutorial on how to make these beautiful papers.

I know I love my chocolate lab T.C. He is my baby since I have no children and I will be very sad the day I lose him. Here's to all the pets in our life who make us laugh or comfort us by just being there to place a friendly head in our lap.
